Once again the coolest guitar competition on the planet, Guitar Idol 2009 drew thousands of entries from around the world and the standard was fantastic.

We knew Guitar Idol would be big, but even we at Lick Library were taken aback by just how big it was. As the world’s leading online destination for guitarists, we’re proud to sponsor any initiative that gives recognition to aspiring players.

The live webcast of the event was a great success with tens of thousands of viewers worldwide watching the finals live and voting for their winning performance.

Most gratifying of all, when it came to the moment of truth – the showdown, on the live stage at the London Guitar Show – all the finalists stepped up to be counted, handled the pressure and gave the packed house a performance to remember. Congratulations then, to the winner, Jack Thammarat from Thailand, and to the other 11 finalists who travelled from all over the world to be there.

Jack walked away with a PRS custom 24 presented to him by PRS endorsee Ace from Skunk Anansie, plus a Marshall JVM stack. He was also awarded a special prize of a £3000 custom guitar made by Rob Williams Guitars.

Congratulations also to everyone else who took part – you helped make Guitar Idol 2009 competition a monster.

I have been playing longer than any of the contestants are old, and I have one thing to say. They ALL are much better than I! I enjoy music too much to criticize it. Lots of new talent out there. Please don't judge. It could be a lot worse. I survived Disco, and I can't personally say I care for rap. I just enjoy anything, where it is obvious that the players are having fun, and doing their best. Just an old fart's opinion, nothing more.

hi there-enjoyed final, but as certain individuals stated, there was a lack of melody in some areas-some of these people can certainly play a guitar but its having musical content also, and being able to write 'saleable' music...but congrats jack and all finalists...as long as they enjoyed themselves thats all that really matters at the end of the day.take care all. dave.

There's one entry that musically stands out in my very personal opinion. That's Daniele Gottardo's. The rest gets boring after a while. I can listen to Daniele's piece over and over again.

Wow. I was privileged to be at the front of the crowd watching all these superb musicians. Quite a range of styles and techniques brilliantly executed live. Jack was my personal fave and many congratulations to him as well as the other finalists. For me, he had the most amazing tone and feel as well as the technical skills, and I would gladly pay up if he had an album out or was playing a full gig. I hear what David Jeffreys et al have to say, but in my opinion (as a Gilbert/Satch/Vai/Andy James/Joe Stump/Tremonti fan) these guys weren't just talking with their guitars, they were absolutely singing their socks off! Lots more like them please! Roll on Guitar Idol 2010. And I hope LickLibrary continue their fine coverage (and downloadable videos of the finalists) for many year to come.

David Jeffreys voiced my sentiments about the experience precisely.... Remedy? Take 2 Chet Atkins, a Jeff Beck, a Carlos Santana and call when you find the melody! In the meantime, nobody is saying anything in this genre that Steve Vai, Dweezle Zappa, Paul Gilbert and John Pettucci haven't already said better! Congratulations to all!

The winner
