Once again the coolest guitar competition on the planet, Guitar Idol 2009 drew thousands of entries from around the world and the standard was fantastic.

We knew Guitar Idol would be big, but even we at Lick Library were taken aback by just how big it was. As the world’s leading online destination for guitarists, we’re proud to sponsor any initiative that gives recognition to aspiring players.

The live webcast of the event was a great success with tens of thousands of viewers worldwide watching the finals live and voting for their winning performance.

Most gratifying of all, when it came to the moment of truth – the showdown, on the live stage at the London Guitar Show – all the finalists stepped up to be counted, handled the pressure and gave the packed house a performance to remember. Congratulations then, to the winner, Jack Thammarat from Thailand, and to the other 11 finalists who travelled from all over the world to be there.

Jack walked away with a PRS custom 24 presented to him by PRS endorsee Ace from Skunk Anansie, plus a Marshall JVM stack. He was also awarded a special prize of a £3000 custom guitar made by Rob Williams Guitars.

Congratulations also to everyone else who took part – you helped make Guitar Idol 2009 competition a monster.

Congratulations to all the finalists, plenty of talent, speed and technical skill demonstrated. However I agree with David Jeffrey's comments concerning the lack of melody and melodic structure. Just another old fart's opinion.

I wish to congratulate all the finalists in making the grade here. It must have been a massive travel hurdle for many to attend. They are all good technicians for sure, but is this what it is all about? I'm saddened to see that Jeff Beck has no contenders here. Where will the next real guitar heroes come from? Far too much time wasted by all these players on sheer, speed and technique. Melody and musical content seems to be of little or no significance with these younger guitarists. Take away melodic structure and it's then just a collection of fairly random notes and it's very very boring to listen to. I think it may have been interesting to allow all these guys play the same tune and this way see who can do something special with their interpretation and approach. No UK players in the final? What is going on, wake up UK, we have always had the world best guitarists in the past. I'm an old guy and I find this fret wizard stuff a million miles away from anything I would call music. Commercially it's also totally unsalable anywhere. These youngster are just using unnecessarily complicated vocabulary and the communication is lost to me and many others I'm sure. Gimme Dave Gilmore, Jeff Beck, Larry Carlton and the others, they may be fossils but they talk with their guitars. And music is all about communication.

Hi guys, just to explain here.... There winner for the competition was NOT chosen by just the online votes, but instead these only formed a PART of the overall judging system as there were a number of live independent judges watching each performer at the venue. The problem with any live broadcast with a global audience is that time differences means that not everyone will be in a position to watch it live and the reason for the hour window is that the winner had to be announced on the day, but as there were a number of other events taking place at LIMS, there was not the luxury of lots of time so the results needed to be collated within the hour from both the online and independent judges.

Yeah... i really think that, the hour difference was the decision factor this time. Congrats to the contestants but... some of them had more advantage because of this. Congrats people.

¿How was the winner elected? ¿Did the jury participate or was it only the online voting that determined the result? ¿When was the online voting system for the live final introduced? I didn´t see it in the rules list that was published on the guitaridol.tv website, and learned of it only a few days before the actual live final. Considering time differences around the world, the one hour voting time lapse immediately after the webcast clearly favours some competitors over others, since in South and Central America, where half of the 2009 finalists come from, it was around 6AM Saturday dawn in winter, which means that most of their supporters were asleep. In the winner´s country Thailand it was 5PM. Maybe this should be considered for the 2010 version.

Jeeeess Christ... That show was amazing indeed! Now that I could watch all of you guys' performances... I'm totally stunned of how good all of you are!!! I'm so happy that I could have been part of this all! I actually feel a little bit embarassed, because the others were sooooo much better than me... Really great job from the judges as well!!!!! Thanks for everything guys, and best of luck! Cheers, András Pálfi (Bandi)

The winner
After a fiercely competitive final with some amazing performances by all twelve finalists, Jack impressed both the in-house judges and online voters with his performance of his track 'On The Way' to become the overall winner of this year's competition.
