Have you tried tipping the guitar so that the headstock is higher than the body? That might help to bring the first fret closer to where you can play. Also, if you have short arms, maybe a guitar with a shorter scale length would help.

It's all down to the individual I find most guitarists when starting out struggle with guitar straps, they just forget to adjust the strap and therefore usually struggle to hold the guitar correctly. Also playing guitar seated rather than standing can be awkward...at first a beginner thinks no chance of me playing whilst standing, yet again this takes time to master correctly.[br]

So a summary adjust guitar strap tip or tilt your guitar like Simon Brown mentioned and eventually you'll find that comfort zone.[br]
