Gibson and TC Electronic to merge
Gibson Guitar has announced a merger with TC Group, a Danish manufacturer whose catalogue includes guitar effects along with voice processors and studio hardware and software products. As well as its TC-branded products, the TC Group includes Tannoy (speakers) and Lab Gruppen (power amps).

Despite this being termed a ‘merger’, the news has led to a deal of angst on Les Paul forums from doomsters convinced that this is a takeover by TC, that Gibson will move to Denmark and that this spells the end of civilization as we know it. It seems more likely that Gibson – whose president, David Berryman, and chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, remain in situ – is the senior partner and that Gibson sees “synergy” which will further its move into technology, of which the Robot Les Paul is just the latest example.
However, as several commentators have noted, Gibson’s been here before, with technology based Oberheim and Opcode. Synergies were promised then, but Gibson remains (primarily) a guitar company.
