Arctic Monkeys and Them Crooked Vultures rock Brixton!
Thu, 27 Aug 2009
The hype was once again lived up to last night, as 2 of the most talked about bands in rock music today, shared the limelight at Brixton's O2 Academy, London. The arctic Monkeys had billed the elusive Queens of the Stone Age/Led Zeppelin/Foo Fighters supergroup as "very special guests" for their “Humbug” album release gig / Reading Festival warm up show.
With so much speculative discussion surrounding the prospect of Them Crooked Vultures making their UK Live debut last night (Aug 26), fans could not be sure that Josh Homme , Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones would be joining the Arctic Monkeys. However, Homme greeted the expectant crowd with a simple “Hello” before the new supergroup got to work on performing songs from their forthcoming debut album. Fans are hoping that this gig will also be Them Crooked Vultures' Reading / Leeds Festival warm-up too, as they recently played Pukkelpop, and Lowlands festivals, and are tipped to make a secret appearance.
Below is video of Them Crooked Vultures opening last night with "Elephants"
The song “Daffodils” was dedicated to the Arctic Monkeys, before Them Crooked Vultures ended their set on an, epic finale. By the time Arctic Monkeys took to the stage, the bar had been significantly raised, and it stood as testament to just how far the Sheffield four-piece have come since their debut release nearly 4 years ago. With Them Crooked Vultures/Queens of the Stone Age fromtman Josh Homme having produced most of their recently released “Humbug” album, Arctic Monkeys have certainly become a musical force to be reckoned with, and their blistering set confirmed it.
While many of the fans on Them Crooked Vultures own web-forum debated the validity of such rock-icons playing in support of the headliners, few could deny that with 3 progressive albums to pick from, Arctic Monkeys had the repertoire to competently compete, and make the night their own. They even reciprocated Them Crooked Vultures’ gesture and dedicated “Pretty Visitors” to the supporting act.

With the Arctic Monkeys set was dominated by surges of energy, it was also peppered with some downbeat songs, displaying how the group have grown over the last few years. It would seem that Reading and Leeds will be in for a treat this weekend, especially if the rumour-mill is true, and again Them Crooked Vultures make an unexpected appearance.
