The singer and his band performed the 1991 hit as a surprise cover for Bassist Tommy Joe Ratcliff's birthday at the end of their set in Auckland, New Zealand.  "It's one of Tommy's favourite songs. We practiced it that afternoon for the first time and we kind of threw it up there. It was a lot of fun” Lambert told Australian radio station, Triple M.

The cover that has been posted on YouTube by fans at the show but Metallica are yet to comment on the performance but the singer has already made a statement before any backlash comes from Metallica's dedicated fans around the world and said, "I think any song could be covered if a musician wants to cover it. I don't really think any song is sacred. There are great songs, there are beautiful songs and I think anybody has the right to sing them."
