Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland revealed on the 'Blue Carpet' at the Viva Elvis show opening in Las Vegas this past weekend that the band have just finished mastering their sixth album which is due out in May.

The album is yet to be named, but this will be the bands first release since the 2001 album 'Shangri-La-Dee-La'  and fans are excited to hear the new material at the forth coming summer festivals they will play.

Scott Weiland confirmed the band will play South By Southwest (in Texas) this March before "Then we go to Europe to play all the big festivals" he tells reported Nicole Brown. (You can watch the full interview below).

Robert DeLeo, the band's bassist recently told Spin.com that the album was "sounding tasty",
the band definitely had their fans in mind when they made the record, "It's always worked for me to put myself in the ears of the listener. I ask myself, "What kind of STP record would I want to hear?" The answer is a really cohesive record with songs that are going to be lasting." he says, "This band is attractive because we bring it to the edge of a cliff and write songs that have attitude."

Brothers and band-mates Dean and Robert DeLeo took on larger roles during producing the new album they told explained in the interview, "Well, it’s a different ball game when you are taking on that aspect of it. We were very spoiled from making our records with Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen). He's extraordinarily great at what he does. I'm not so good at walking around the control room with a pen and clipboard in my hands, marking down what takes are the best. It's a lot of work. But I like being the very best I can be, and when you're producing you are taking on everyone's performances and wanting it to be the best it can be." Dean says when asked about his part in producing the record.

"We decided to do this record ourselves and it's been a great learning process. It's going to be something we look back at and are definitely proud of. We did most of the work, musically speaking, at Eric's studio. But we have the luxury of using three studios, including Scott's and my home studio. We we're just kind of tag-teaming the duties," Robert concludes.
