And G is for Guthrie Govan, to whom - as anyone who has ever seen the man perform will know - every one of those epithets applies. Especially genius, and especially in its sense of 'innate ability', of being a natural. So natural a player is Guthrie Govan, in fact, that you could be forgiven for imagining that he must have been born with a guitar in his hand. You'd only be half wrong.

 Guthrie can’t remember when he first picked up a guitar, but people tell him he was three when he played his first chord.  (He does remember, though, that the chord was a basic D shape, for which is three year old fingers only needed to cover half of the fret board.)  Yes, of course it was a musical household. His parents had a large record collection, and his dad who had once owned late fifties Strat – knew five chords.  A musical family, then, but ‘music enthusiasts rather than accomplished practitioners of the art,’ he says – and there was no pressure.
