Wed, 19 May 2010

On Wednesday 5th May 2010, we had the amazing Guthrie Govan in to host another live webcast, in which over a thousand of people signed up!

During the webcast Guthrie takes you through his gear and his massive pedal board, talks about his experiences on tour, working with rapper Dizzy Rascal, how he learnt to play guitar at young age as well as tips on Legato, speed playing, Picking, his favourite gear and some exercise recommendations.

If you missed the webcast or want to re-watch it again… then we’ve got good news, the Webcast is now available for you to watch by clicking the image below!

Here’s a list of the questions Guthrie answered in during the webcast so you can check them out on the video:

• Can you demonstrate your way of playing an interesting ascending legato line? I notice you do this alot descending, but I don't hear it much ascending. could you show some legato technique to get us started?
• How do keep your phrases clean and the other strings totally clean, especially when moving up or down several strings?
• You have great finger strength and independence, how did you develop this to such a high level? Do you have any tips and exercises for speed and strength primarily for the pinkie?
• Do you think being able to read & write music is important and fundamental for a guitarist’s development?
• If you was learning guitar over again from scratch, knowing what you know now what would you learn first to give your playing a kick start in the right direction?
• Could you please show us how you do that very fast percussive funk style strumming that you slip into a regular 16th note funk strumming pattern.
•  Could you please show us how to play some good chicken picking like in the "Rhode Island Shred" track?
• How do you find playing with Dizzie Rascal? He is obviously a fan of your playing? How did you get involved?
• Could just wondered if you could explain those Eric Johnson style chords please?
• How did you first approach modal improvisation on chord changes?
• What's that crazy arpeggio you do in Wonderful Slippery Thing?
• What are your musical influences? what current bands do you take inspiration from?
• Do you have advice for playing slide guitar in standing tuning? could you show us?
• I am 14 and school often interferes with my practice schedule, how could I make the best of 3 hours of practice each day?
• What about the "Magic Button" on your new guitar?
