Coldplay to open 2012 Olympics?
Tue, 12 Apr 2011
Coldplay are rumoured to have been asked to open the 2012 Olympic Games in London next summer according to the Daily Mirror newspaper.
The song “Welcome Song” has been especially written for the London games commissioned by The Dartington Hall Trust and have named Coldplay’s Chris Martin as the top of their list of singers.
A source recently told the tabloid newspaper, "Chris is at the top of the list to front the official record. He's a huge and a British musical icon, with an international profile. We're pulling out all the stops to get hold of him, ideally with the rest of Coldplay involved, too.
Coldplay are the biggest stadium rockers in Britain today and their style of anthemic music would be perfect for the Olympics. The hope is that they would perform at the opening ceremony, as well as produce a recording of the track, which could help fund good causes in British sport."
The Olympic opening ceremony will take place on July 27, 2012 and will be produced by Oscar winning film director Danny Boyle. Other singers rumoured to be on the shortlist are Muse and singers Joss Stone and Damon Albarn.
Nothing has yet been confirmed.
