The Mars Volta set to support Soundgarden on selected dates

After nearly 12 years out Soundgarden's Chris Cornell alluded to a full reunion at the start of this year (2011) via his twitter account, tweeting "The break is over and school is back in session. Sign up now. Knights of the Soundtable ride again!"

Well, as if the prospect of seeing them live again after over a decade out wasn't enough, it has since been announced through their official website that Grammy award winning psyceldic krautrock act The Mars Volta will play support to Soundgarden on selected dates of their upcoming North American summer tour. They are set to open for the shows in Denver, Philadelphia and Denver.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala command argubally one of the best live bands on the planet and this recent news has undoubedly just made an already massive reunion tour for Soundgarden, a whole lot bigger.

7/2 – Toronto, ON, Molson Canadian Amphitheater
7/13 – Philadelphia, PA, Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing
7/18 – Denver, CO, Red Rocks Amphitheater
7/22 – Los Angeles, CA, The Forum
