Tom Petty to issue cease & desist to Republican candidate
Thu, 30 Jun 2011
Blues-rock legend Tom Petty has requested US Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann stop using his 1974 hit 'American Girl' as he campaign anthem.
Bachman has used the song during her campaign drive as candidate for the Republican nomination for the 2012 U.S. presidential election and although she may be gaining support amongst the US voters, she has angered the politically-active Petty.
It is understood that Petty's management is currently drafting a 'cease and desist' order to prevent Bachman from using the song for her own political purpose, reports NBC News.
This is not the first time Petty has stopped political figures who he opposes from using his music. In 2000 he blocked George W Bush from using 'I Won't Back Down' at political rallies. Although Petty did allow Hillary Clinton to use 'American Girl' in her push to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.
