Damon Albarn, Flea & Tony Allen set to open Cork Jazz Festival

Wed, 13 Jul 2011

Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers and world renowned afro-beat drummer and Fela Kuti member, Tony Allen are working together on a collaborative studio album under the moniker of An Honest Jon's Chop Up, according to Consequence of Sound.

Details on the project are still sketchy but Irish Examiner has reported that the trio are set to open the world famous Guinness Cork Jazz Festival this coming October. Other acts scheduled to appear include Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kokanko Sato, Theo Parrish, Shangaan Electro, and possibly Erykah Badu.

It will be the third time the trio have performed together, they previously played gigs in New York & London in 2008.

Albarn previously said of the collaboration: "[It's] another band with Tony Allen; centred around what he does," said Albarn of the project. "But this time it’s him and me and Flea from the Chili Peppers and some of my favourite African musicians will be involved also. Flea of course is an anagram for Flea and Flea is so into this music – so that’s been great."

The Cork Jazz Festival runs from October 28-31 in venues across Cork, Ireland. Other confirmed acts for the festival include Kyle Eastwood (the son of Clint), Jean-Luc Ponty, and the Bobby Watson All-Stars. Tickets are available via the festival’s website.
