Ian Mclagan discusses Rod Stewarts replacement

Fri, 05 Aug 2011

Ian McLagan

Faces keys man, Ian McLagan has revealed in a frank and honest interview with Music Radar some details on the controversial decision to tour with Mick Hucknall.

The latest incarnation of The Faces, which also features former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock in place of the late Ronnie Lane, have tried on a number of occasions to regroup but after the recent failure the band made the decision to tour with the Simply Red frontman at the helm.

The keyboardist saud: "The thing is Rod’s voice isn’t what it was. He had surgery on his vocal cords a few years ago and it’s changed the way he sings.

"We had some rehearsals a couple of years ago and we basically had to re-learn all the songs in different keys. Ron Wood had to put heavier strings on his guitar and tune everything down.

"We all agreed it just wasn’t the same. That’s not to say we’ll never play with Rod again – if at some point he’s really up for it, and we can all get comfortable with the changes to the songs, there’s no reason for us not to get back out there."

Mclagan goes on to explain that they were always confident it would work with Mick, even if some fans and critics had their reservations, as he has been a Faces fan from "way back when" which meant he already knew all the songs inside out. He went on to call Mick a "rocker at heart."
