Tony Iommi addresses the Black Sabbath reunion story

Wed, 17 Aug 2011

Yesterday, Black Sabbath fans celebrated and the internet was buzzing with the 'news' that Tony Iommi had confirmed the original line up of Black Sabbath reunion rumours that had been circulating since the beginning of the year.

As reported yesterday, the news broke as Birmimgham Mail newspaper posted the story yesterday morning after journalist Andy Coleman had claimed he'd spoken with Tony Iommi about the reunion.

The reported revealed that in June Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi had written new material for a future record set for next year.

He quoted the guitarist as telling him that, "We’re really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we’ve been writing is really good. It’s more back to the old original stuff.’"

The article then goes on to explain how the band had been keeping the secret for some time and that vocalist Ozzy Osbourne had been the worst at trying to keep it quiet, Iommi reported said, "It’s all been very hush-hush. Ozzy’s been the worst at trying to hold it back. He’s doing a lot of TV and he’s being asked stuff about a reunion and he’s going ‘well I never say never.’"

However, yesterday evening, Tony Iommi issued a statement via his website denying he had spoken to the journalist the day before as reported,

"I'm saddened that a Birmingham journalist whom I trusted has chosen this point in time to take a conversation we had back in June and make it sound like we spoke yesterday about a Black Sabbath reunion.

At the time I was supporting the Home of Metal exhibition was merely speculating shooting the breeze on something all of us get asked constantly "Are you getting back together?"

Thanks to the internet it's now gone round the world as some sort of "official" statement on my part, absolute nonsense. I hope he's enjoyed his moment of glory, he won't have another at my expense.

To my old pals, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill, sorry about this, I should have known better."No official confirmation has yet been released by the band or their management regarding the 'reunion'.
