Motley Crue honoured with Elmer Valentine Award

Fri, 19 Aug 2011

Motley Crue returned to their old stomping ground on Thursday (18th) where they were honoured at the House of Blues with the Elmer Valentine award for their contributions to the Sunset Strip's storied musical history.

Crue founders, Nikkie Sixx & Tommy Lee along with Mick Mars and frontman, Vince Neil were all in attendance to receive the award, which was named after one of the Strip's co-founders, at the first night of the Sunset Strip Music Festival.

The famed Sunset Strip in West Hollywood is where the rock veterans first started out playing at legendary venues such as The Roxy & Whisky A Go-Go throughout the 1980's.

Guitarist Mick Mars jokingly told ABC News Radio that to him, the award represented "thirty years of hell" before declaring that "to be honoured is an honour."
Drummer Lee recently told Rolling Stone ahead of the weekend long festival that he is happy that the band's hard rock sound still appeals to young fans, he said:

"I think about that actually every day when we play – I think ‘we’ve been doing this 30 years,’" he told Rolling Stone. "And when I look out in the audience, I see kids that are seven years old and I see people that are 57. It just makes me realize there’s a whole new generation of kids coming to see us play, which, to me, means that’s longevity, so we’ll still be doing this who knows how many more years. I get a big smile on my face knowing that we could be doing this as well and as long as the Stones or Aerosmith..."

Other artists on hand to pay tribute to the Crue last night (18th August) were The Doors keyboardist, Ray Manzarek and New York Dolls frontman, David Johansen.
