David Bowie 'Space Oddity' has been turned into childrens book

Thu, 01 Sep 2011

David Bowie has had his 1969 classic, 'Space Oddity' single turned into a illustrated children's book.

The unlikely choice of turning fictional character, Major Tom into a children's book hero will probably surprise some people. Especially when you consider the trippy space-rock classic, that is about a wayward astronaut losing contact with Earth & then being left to float helplessly around the galaxy, is enough to give most kids (and adults for the matter) nightmares.

Ontario based designer, Andrew Klob has said:

"It was an entirely personal project. The song always played out like a picture book in my head anyway, so I wanted to see if I could make it work. It was for entirely selfish reasons."

The Canadian artist & Bowie fan went on to explain how he went about transforming the lyrics in to pictures, he said:

"It's been really cool hearing all these different interpretations of the lyrics, and all I can say is that the approach I took was the one that translated best to an image-based story."

However, Klob has revealed in an interview with Wired that he chose to 'turn a blind eye to the various deeper & darker meanings of Bowies lyrics.'

Andrew Kolb's 'Space Oddity' book is available as a free download from the artist's website.
