Sting to co-write musical, 'The Last Ship'

Tue, 06 Sep 2011

Police frontman & bassist, Sting is reportedly working on a new musical about his hometown of Newcastle, according to The New York Times.

The musical, which will be titled, 'The Last Ship', will feature music & lyrics by Sting and will be co-written with Tony Award winning book writer, Brian Yorkey.

Although details of the plot are sketchy descriptions of the musical's characters suggest a story that is set in the 80's.

Mr. Yorkey said of the upcoming production:

"The Last Ship" was still in its "throw it up against the wall and see what sticks" phase. "It’s Sting’s first foray into writing for musical theatre," he said, "so we wanted to start having him meet actors and hear them sing at the earliest possible point."

The musical's score is likely feature new material from Sting rather than existing songs from his musical catalogue.
