Rare R.E.M demo surfaces

Wed, 05 Oct 2011

An extremely rare cassette recording from R.E.M's earliest days has surfaced on online, reports Billboard.com

The 6-track demo, originally recorded in April 1981 with producer Mitch Easter at Drive-In Studios in Winston-Salem is now available just weeks after the band's breakup after over 30 years in the spotlight

The demo was initially intended as a promotional tool for the band on their first visit to New York City.

According to founding guitarist Peter Buck, only 400 copies were ever made and each cassette contains two different renditions of 'Sitting Still' & 'Radio Free Europe' which both went on to feature on their debut album, Murmur. The third track is 'White Tornado' which was included on the band's second record Reckoning.
