BMI awards honour Queen as "Icons"

Wed, 05 Oct 2011

Queen announced yesterday on their website queenonline.com they were to be honoured as "Icons" by the BMI London awards last night for their "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers."

The event hosted by Broadcast Music Inc, awards acts who have had airplay success in the United States, speaking to BBC 6 Music at the event guitarist Brian May said, "It means a lot, especially because it's an American award."

Queen Drummer Roger Taylor added, "Though we were kind of married to America for a long time we never really were very much in terms of awards. We're not bursting with Grammys, so it's nice to have that tribute from our peers."

Queen’s Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon join past honourees Van Morrison, The Bee Gees, Willie Nelson and James Brown to name a few.

In addition to Queen, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison were also awarded prizes at the ceremony.
