Thu, 20 Oct 2011
The powers of social media could once again scupper the chances of this year's X Factor winner bagging the number one spot, as the now standard 'facebook Chrismas #1 campaign' gets underway, reports DigitalSpy
Fans have set up a group called 'Nirvana for Christmas No1' on the social network site which as already gained more than 33,000 'likes'.
Nirvana's seminal 90's hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is the song in question and bookies have given odds of 6/1 for the campaign to succeed.
Organiser of the latest stunt claim they are doing it because of X Factor's refusal to change the name of girl-band Rhythmix, which is also happens to be the name of a Brighton based childrens charity which uses music to help the communication skills of vulnerable youngsters.
The 'facebook campaign' trend was first introduced in 2009 when part-time rock DJ Jon Morter who decided to set up a group on facebook encouraging people to download expletive heavy RATM classic, 'Killing In the Name Of' in order to topple the monopoly that the X Factor appeared to have on the Christmas #1 spot.
The campaign was a success and sold 50,000 more downloads then the 2009 winner Joe Mceldrys single 'The Climb'.
