Campaign to secure Jimmy Page a knighthood gets underway by Tory MP

Tue, 15 Nov 2011

We all know Jimmy Page's status as rock legend is well deserved and his guitar prowess is rivalled by only a handful of musicians from past and present.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice for his work with both the Yardbirds & Led Zeppelin, the Heston born maestro has appeared in countless 'Greatest Guitarist' polls throughout the years never featuring outside of the Top 10, and is responsible for some of the world's most renowned rock licks.

So it's surprising that it has taken the best part of 50 years for the man born James Patrick Page to be nominated for the Queens Honours list.

But according to the NME a young Conservative MP has launched a campaign to secure a Knighthood for the Led Zeppelin icon.

Louise Mensch, who is an MP for Corby in Northamptonshire, took to twitter to reveal that she has suggested Page be knighted in the next Honours list.

She tweeted:

"I've proposed Jimmy Page. Waiting to see if that finds favour with Honours Directorate. I hope so."

Mensch has denied that her husband, who used to manager Page and currently looks after Metallica, Muse & Snow Patrol, was behind the suggestion.

She said: "Clearly there is nobody more worthy of a knighthood and I am glad to say I have gathered support from every major record label in the UK."

Page had previously been awarded an OBE in 2005 for his charity work helping street children in Brazil.
