Could Nirvana crash the X Factor Christmas #1 party?
Fri, 18 Nov 2011
Bookmakers Ladbrokes have given Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' 4/1 odds of claiming the Christmas #1 spot, reports MusicNews
X Factor's newly reinstated Amelia Lily is currently the favourite at 7/2, but the classic grunge anthem is in close contention.
If you are wondering how the seminal 1991 single is currently the second favourite for the lucrative #1 position, then it's down to the organizers of this year's 'Nirvana For Christmas No.1' facebook campaign. The online protest was set up after The X Factor allegedly stole the name of Brighton based charity Rhythmix for the girl group currently in the show.
A charity spokesman for Rhythmix said:
"The X Factor are refusing to back down," a charity spokesman said. "We believe it would be simple and appropriate for them to change the name. We see no reason why they shouldn't.
'But now we're involved in a costly legal debate which takes valuable funds away from delivering services to young people,' he continued. 'We're at a loss as to why anyone would even consider trying to find a legal loophole to ensure a band can continue to use the name of a small yet highly-respected charity."
