Harlem artist recreates Jimi Hendrix using thumbtacks
Thu, 26 Jan 2012
An innovative US based artist who creates portraits of black icons in pop culture using coloured thumbtacks has now added a 36 x 45" canvas featuring Jimi Hendrix to his 'Mixtape' collection.
Woolery used over 2,000 thumbtacks to recreate the guitarist's psychedelic afro. Other black icons that have been recreated via Woolery's rather unique technique are hip-hop titans Jay-Z and Kanye West and US President Barack Obama.
Mr Woolery explains on his website:
'I originally sat in my apt/studio looking for materials that had vibrant colours and considered cereal as my medium. Luckily I moved away from Toucan Sam when I found a mixed colour pack of thumbtacks.'
A percentage of Woolery's pieces are used for good causes including donations to the Harlem School of Arts in an attempt to give back to underprivileged communities in NYC.
