Birmingham city council to host a Black Sabbath Day?
Wed, 01 Feb 2012
Birmingham city council may sanction an official Black Sabbath Day to highlight the heavy metal elders outstanding contribution to music.
In 1969 Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler & Bill Ward formed Black Sabbath in Aston, Birmingham. After 18 albums, years of touring and a number of lineup changes, the original foursome announced that they were reuniting and recording a new album in November 2011.
Now the Birmingham Post is reporting that their place in the city's musical history could be honoured with a day devoted to the band, but only if officials take on board the recommendation of a recent report which urges the city to cash in on the renewed interest in the band.
The Destination Birmingham document said: "Black Sabbath’s reunion and their agreement to headline Download Festival in June is an opportunity we should not miss.
"Early discussions are taking place about how best the city should celebrate this and the council should be supporting any celebrations."
Philip Parkin, the report’s author said: "The report is saying that Black Sabbath reforming is significant, Black Sabbath are huge and metal is huge. Given this, it is us saying to the council that we need to celebrate the fact these people come from Birmingham and there could be various ways we could do it… Ozzy Osbourne came from Aston and he’s an international star.
"The music scene is really bubbling along in Birmingham at the moment. It’s an interesting time for new bands and we want the council to support that."
