Earlier today, Adam Yauch, aka MCA from American Hip-Hop group the Beastie Boys passed away after his almost three year battle with cancer. He was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivatory gland.

In a statement on the groups website this morning (Friday 4th May) they confirmed that Adam had sadly passed away at his home in New York City this morning.

Along with his fellow band members Adam "Adrock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond they went on to sell 40 million records worldwide and last month were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio but Adam Yauch had been unable to attend.

Not just a vocalist for the pioneering hip-hop group, Adam "MCA" Yauch had taught himself to play bass guitar in High School then formed the band that would go on to be known worldwide, the Beastie Boys,he also directed many of Beastie Boys most popular music videos under the alter ego Nathanial Hörnblowér.

Beastie Boys formed in 1979, releasing their first full length album in 1986, "Licence To Ill" which helped launch them into the big time.

Last year released a huge thirty minute video to promote their latest studio album "The Hot Sauce Committee Part Two), the video was directed by Yauch and starred a number of top Hollywood stars including Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and more portraying the Beastie Boys.  The director credit for the video was under his own name this time, not his alterego.
