Good to see a tanlet at work. I can't match that.

With a new scale in 2 positions and a new position for the minor pentatonic scale there is a lot to learn in week 3. Crucially, Danny Gill spends a good amount of time teaching you how to combine the major and minor pentatonic scales and actually use them. In my opinion this sets the course apart from other 'learn rock guitar' courses. There is a great section on double stops and plenty of licks with a straight ahead rock n roll feel - think AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The DVD concludes with 3 licks in the style of Angus Young. I'm not much of an AC/DC fan but these licks are great fun to play and easy to improvise around. About halfway through the DVD I noticed a huge improvement in my playing. Of course, I'm still a lead guitar beginner but I can reliably play in key and move around the fretboard. I no longer run out of ideas and end up playing up and down the scales. Well... not as often as I used to. I don't think I'd embarrass myself in a jam situation. I'm having great fun twisting Danny Gill's licks, combining them, and improvising with my own (admittedly sub-standard) licks and phrases. I think spending a lot of time watching and listening to Danny play has affected my playing sub-consciously. I've noticed an improvement in my tone and vibrato. I was really sloppy before but now I properly mute the other strings while playing and my bends are more accurate. I don't even think about these things consciously. I found week 3 quite easy. I had to pause and rewind a few times to nail licks and commit them to memory but there was nothing particularly challenging. However, looking ahead to Disc 4, I think it will be a different story next week.
