Birthday Special Paul STanley & Dave Grohl

This week sees the birthday of Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Eddie Van Halen. Born Edward Lodewijk Van Halen on January 26th 1955 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands (moving to Pasadena, California when he was 7 years old), he turned 55 on yesterday!

As a child he won numerous talent shows playing piano - but didn’t find it challenging enough, saying “Who wants to sit in front of the piano? That's boring.” When his older brother Alex began to learn to play guitar Eddie took to the drums. However, when Alex started to then learn to play drums overtaking Eddie's own abilities the younger of the two switched to guitar instantly
becoming attached to it -locking himself away in his bedroom as a teen to practice and walking around the house with his guitar strapped on yet unplugged.

When Van Halen began in 1972 Eddie sang lead vocals but quickly became frustrated with it and the band let David Lee Roth join the band to save money on renting his equipment, who later suggested they change the band's name to VAN HALEN as it sounded ‘cool'.

In past interviews Eddie has mentioned many influences that have included Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Brian May – nowadays so many artists have listed Eddie himself as their influence, his solo for “Eruption” was also voted number 2 in Guitar World’s 100’s greatest solos, he was also honoured by the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 2, when a player hits 500 or more consecutive notes they receive the “Eddie Van Halen” achievement in the game.

LickLibrary pay tribute to some of Eddie Van Halen's greatest Solos in our latest Van Halen release - Learn to Play Van Halen The Solos.
With this excellent DVD Stuart Bull shows you how to nail five guitar solos. Check out the YouTube uploads on the right for more details.

Rumours are still circulating that Van Halen are set to tour in 2010, we’ll let you know if and when something gets confirmed!

Interview with Michael Anthony

There's a brand new web lesson LickLibrary contributor Jamie Humphries has filmed a new Van Halen for "Mean Street" from the band's 1981 album Fair Warning, the track is well known for Eddie Van Halen's famous solo introduction which sees him expertly mimicking slap bass technique and an ingenious rhythmic displacement idea.
