Mike Casswell

It is with great sadness that we post the news of Michael Casswell's tragic death in a swimming accident while on holiday in Spain. All of us at Licklibrary are shocked and saddened by MIke's passing, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family at this difficult time.

Michael was an extremely talented musician and much loved member of the Licklibrary team.

Mike started playing the guitar from the age of 11. In the mid-1980s he was signed to RCA USA as a part of a band called Heroes. From the late 1980s to the early 1990s he was signed to MCA UK with the British rock band Walk on Fire, which released an album Blind Faith in 1989. In 1992, he joined the Brian May Band for the South America tour. Mike co-wrote and co-produced Cozy Powell's last solo album Especially for You that was released from Polygram Records in 1998. From 2006 to 2008, Mike played in the West End Queen musical We Will Rock You. Since 2011, he has been regularly contributing to Guitar Interactive magazine with columns, gear reviews and interviews. In 2014, Mike released a solo album entitled Complaints about the noise.

I've always enjoyed learning from Mike's inspired guitar playing. His work on Peter Green songs and solos are the best I've ever heard.

    Many thanks Mike.

Mike, great DVD - the tune is excellent, the techniques shown are applicable for all levels. Your playing is simply fantastic and you have a unique voice to your style. Thanks.

Could you tell us/me about that strat used in the DVD? It looks like a modified Jeff Beck artist series. I am looking to purchase a strat and it would be helpful to know what yours is. Thanks.

Hello Michael Caswell, the preeminent guitarist at LL...Couple things:

    1. Please, please, please do a DVD on Jeff Beck's "Truth" album...I consider this the best blues/rock of all time and was my favorite period of his playing

    2. Have you ever considered doing personal lessons like on Face Time or something similar? I know you probably don't have the time, but just sayin'.

Last, I guess you are probably my favorite guitarist anywhere. When I took up the electric guitar again about 3 1/2 years ago, I found you on UTube, and although I don't know you, I consider you a friend. Best of everything to you sir

Mike The Rolling Stones DVD was really great. Love your style of teaching. I learned the Honky Tonk Woman and Angie and was so surprised that I actually got it. When I first got the DVD, I watched you play those two and thought I would be very difficult to learn. I have to tell you I got them both down in no time. The Learn to play Free was the first one I got of yours and learned All Right Now note for note. There are many great instructors with Lick Library and I have learned a lot from Danny Gill and a few others, but I have to say there is something about your style of teaching that makes it easier for me to grasp. Just wish you had more blues rock stuff available.

your Jeff Beck Slow Blues Quick Licks DVD is top drawer. Your playing is exquisite and , as always, you make all the ideas accessible to us lesser mortals

Michael is a very good communicator (needless to say an

awesome player) who demystifies very clearly and patiently licks and techniques what would have taken me forever to figure out by myself.. A true professional, I really enjoy his DVD's...

I just came on this website after being away for a few months and am really sad to hear of Mike's passing. He was my favorite instructor on Lick Library, and besides being an great guitarist and instructor, he came across as a really cool and witty person. RIP Mike. You will be missed.

I just seen the tickets go on sale for the Mike Casswell Tribute show, and then I realised that Mike had died, which was a shock

He always came across as a genuine nice guy and I even bought some of his stuff just because he was doing it.

One of my memories of him from his lessons was his changing hair lengths.

My sympathies to his friends and family.

I was shocked and deeply saddened upon reading the news of Michael Casswell's untimely passing. I had the opportunity to discuss guitars, music and his album on Facebook . We saw eye to eye on many things and I eagerly looked forward to his tutorials, concept ideas & gear reviews. He was a humble person that put himself out there and shared his talent. I never met Michael personally, but I feel as if I lost a very good friend. It is my hope that through his legacy many generations of great musicians emerge.

Another shocked comment about Michael's death. I can't tell you how much enjoyment I received from his videos over the years. The world was a better place with him in it.
