User Reviews

As I noted in my review of his “Extreme Pentatonic Licks” DVD ( here ) Andy is a great British talent and any less than positive remarks I might make about this DVD aren’t a criticism of his playing – simply the style of production…so let me get that out of the way. Two things really irritate me about a video with a contemporary date such as this – the lack of accompanying tablature, and the lack of a really concise theoretical background. As before, I understand the omission of tablature in those DVD’s which cover other artists music but when it comes to a selection of licks by the performing artist failing to include a booklet or .pdf is a glaring error. The lack of theoretical background reduces this video from a really informative video covering a plethora of tapping techniques and their musical/theoretical applications (which would be a great benefit to further studies and development) to a simple “licks” video. The time for that style of video was the dawn of the shred era and VHS…not now when Shred is a well documented art form and we have the technology to make comprehensive products with a minimum of extra effort. Now the positives. As with many LL products this weighs in at a healthy two hours – some of this is no doubt a product of the lack of accompanying tablature – but mostly this is down to the amount of material which is included. The demonstrations are concise and well explained, the camera work is clear (including split screen format which is essential with some of the more convoluted licks) and the audio quality is first rate….to say nothing of Andy’s playing which is of course excellent. Whilst not quite reaching the two-handed sequenced scalar ideas of the likes of Jennifer Batten, TJ Helmerich and Dave Celentano this video does run the whole gamut of possibilities from single string licks (even these are dynamically enhanced through the use of rhythmic ideas and effects) to string skipping, tapping through pentatonics and arpeggios right up to “over the neck” tapping a la Eddie Van Halen’s “Poundcake” and Steve Vai’s “Building the Church” – in essence there’s material for the beginner, intermediate and advanced player. Considering the price and high standard of the DVD (niggles aside) then it’s still a recommended choice and trying to cram even more information could have been competely overwhelming. Niggles aside (which really don’t detract that much from the end result) this is a great introduction to, and examination of the tapping technique. **** Stars
