I was actually disregarding this product when it came out possibly because I felt that I had the transcription folios for most of Megadeth's back catalogue. However after getting into Licklibrary's DVDs more, I realised that a picture is worth a thousand words and also my respect for Megadeth (and Licklibrary) just shot up to a new level. What is better than having a professional guitarist explaining how to play songs on a DVD for you to learn at your own pace? I can't think of anything much. Better than any transcription folio, if you ask me.
In this DVD you will be taught five Megadeth songs, mainly from the 90's, starting with the blistering epic thrash metal classics: Holy Wars...The Punishment Due and Hangar 18. These are among the most technically advanced songs that Megadeth have ever recorded and to have both of them taught on DVD is just one of the greatest things ever as they have a lot of complexity to them. It is also a good thing that the lessons of these songs are together on one of the two DVDs in this set.
The rest of the songs (Symphony of Destruction, Train of Consequences and 99 Ways to Die) are more straight-up heavy metal but nevertheless excellent songs to learn and signature of Megadeth's tenure in the 90's.
Andy James explains all parts to each song very well and plays them to illustrate how they fit together and he performs them outstandingly. My review here is by no means an attempt to discredit transcription folios but given the way that the songs are taught here by Andy James, I feel that the player will learn not only faster but also have a fun time doing it, especially if the songs are technically demanding such as these. I know for sure that I am having a great time learning these songs.
This DVD is aimed at intermediate to advanced players, especially to those who have well developed rhythm and lead guitar technique. However there are parts which beginning guitarists could get down and then later work on the more advanced parts, as Andy James stated in the trailer for the DVD. Also, if you are a fan of Megadeth, this would be a really great DVD for you as well, regardless of your level. Thank you very much Andy James and Licklibrary!
